High praise from Ofsted for Shropshire school, Oldbury Wells, Bridgnorth
High Expectations, High Quality, Highly Effective
Headteacher, Sarah Godden
Mrs Godden explains why our school has been graded ‘Good.’
I know that everyone wants their child to go to a good school, and the schools in Bridgnorth are certainly among the best in Shropshire, if not the country. So I am proud to say, in every respect Oldbury Wells is now officially a good school. Ofsted said we are, ‘providing high quality education for all students.’ Praise indeed. I have included a number of quotes in this editorial, all of which are from our 2013 Ofsted report (click here for full report here).
Ofsted tell us we have made rapid and sustained improvements and that students are flourishing. So how have we done it?
The most important and fundamental thing we have done is very simple. We have been, and still are, “committed to providing high quality education for all students.” This applies to the most able as well as those who need extra support or time.
“Sharply focussed on individual needs”
This commitment to the education of every student is core to how our school works. We know as parents that all children are different and so at Oldbury wells we require our staff to plan accordingly. Ofsted agree and said, “Teachers plan lessons that are carefully matched to the different needs of students.
“Pace of Learning high”
Our school has also been praised for its teaching. Inspectors found that teachers carefully plan high pace, engaging and varied activities. We know we work best when we enjoy what we do. Indee d at Oldbury Wells inspectors found that our “students enjoy being at school.” Oldbury Wells sixth form teachers were especially recognised, with 86% of lessons graded Outstanding!
“Improving students’ achievement”
All of these factors mean that fundamentally year on year our exam results have been rising. Parents can see exam results for themselves in a handy format through the Ofsted website, called the ‘data dashboard’( http://dashboard.ofsted.gov.uk/dash.php?urn=123583 ). A quick look at Oldbury results will tell parents we are doing well, and continuing to make improvements. In fact Ofsted say we continue to be ‘improving rapidly’ and ‘above national averages.’ We are one of the highest improving schools in Bridgnorth.
“Highly Inclusive School”
It matters to us at Oldbury Wells that we are inclusive and have a strong focus on equality of opportunity. With high expectations on behaviour and a tough line on misbehaviour we have Ofsted say we have created a ‘positive’ school ethos, where students are ‘keen to do well” and are “friendly, polite and keen to share.” I am very proud of them – I am sure you are too.
This report provides us with a validation of our work over the past few years. It reflects what has now become deeply embedded professional practice. We will continue this work, building further improvements.
